NZCCSS Supports Release of NZ's Children's Social Health Monitor (24/11/2009)
“When a recession hits children are often forgotten, somehow their needs are not as important as sentencing offenders or implementing new tax systems” say Trevor McGlinchey, Executive Officer, for the New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services (NZCCSS). Even during more affluent times health professionals were raising concerns about the poor health outcomes of many NZ children. NZCCSS shares this concern, particularly given the recent downturn in the economy and its likely impact on the growing numbers of low income and benefit dependent families.

We welcome the release of the NZ Children’s Social Health Monitor developed by of group of dedicated health professionals. The Monitor seeks to provide robust data on a range of health and well being indicators. “It’s vital that policy makers have good information and can respond quickly should the baseline indicators show deterioration in child wellbeing” say Trevor McGlinchey.

NZCCSS worked alongside the health professionals in their development of the NZ Children’s Social Health Monitor.  NZCCSS also publishes the Vulnerability Report a quarterly report that tracks official information from Government agencies and also gathers ‘on the ground’ reports from Christian social service organisations and community groups. “The soon to be released third Vulnerability Report details some of the problems being faced by families. For example we have received reports of two and sometimes three families sharing one house and even of families living out of their cars” , says Trevor McGlinchey.

Collectively the Vulnerability Report and the NZ Children’s Social Health Monitor will help to draw attention to the impact of the recession of children, families and the wider community, giving profile to some of our most vulnerable citizens.

“NZCCSS believes we must create a society where the needs of our children are given priority – and this can only be achieved when we ensure their families are properly supported, have decent homes and can access effective health care and social support when they need it”, says Shaun Robinson, President NZCCSS. “The NZ Children’s Social Health Monitor will help to highlight the need for a fair start for our kids. We must grow a more just and caring society – a society where we show that we treasure our children”.  The report is online at www.nzchildren.co.nz
